Instagram Pips Twitter at the Post, Snapchat Introduces Geofilters
This week in #socialmedia, Instagram overtakes Twitter, Twitter rolls out a new editing tool, and Snapchat announces a geofilter facility!
Instagram Overtakes Twitter
Watch out Twitter, you’ve just been pushed aside! Instagram has overtaken Twitter’s 284 million monthly active users worldwide by clocking in at a nice 300 million. Locally, Instagram is also sitting pretty with 4 million Australian users per month, a solid 1.2 million users ahead of Twitter.
It’s not news that Twitter has been struggling to maintain momentum, with consecutive periods of sluggish growth harming their ranking. In comparison, Facebook-owned Instagram has been thriving due to its younger, tech-savvy user demographic.
On average, there are around 70 million photos uploaded to Instagram each day, with a staggering total sum of 30 billion photos to date. That’s a lot of #selfies.
Due to this steady increase in users, Instagram introduced paid advertisements to their platform. A wise financial decision, seeing as it has made them more attractive to marketers and businesses alike, however it was met with some initial resistance from users.
Rather ironically, Instagram is also stepping its authenticity game up, announcing that it intends to rid the site of “spammy” ad accounts and non-human users. This will help to improve the overall quality of the content in your feed, but some users may get a rude shock when their beefy list of followers drops overnight after Instagram weeds out the spammers. Watch out, hashtag hijackers!
Twitter rolls out new photo filters
Twitter has added new photo filters to iOS and Android applications!
Similar to rival Instagram, Twitter users can now apply a filter to their photograph after adding it to a tweet. Adding a number of new styles and options for content, it’s easier to swipe through the different options to find something that suits you.
Twitter has been trying to be more proactive after a recent decline in growth, making the service more user friendly by pushing out updates that have made categorizing information easier, and serving content to new users based on their interests.
Snapchat announces the ‘community geofilter’
Do you take pride in your Snapchat masterpieces? Show your local area how creative you are with the new community geofilter option!
Just in time for the holidays, Snapchat has developed special overlays for Snaps that can only be accessed in certain locations. You can now choose the geographic area you want your filter to be available in and upload an image to be approved by the Snapchat team.
Simply swipe right after you take your photo to see if there is a geofilter where you are, and your Snap will show your location!
